Wow! This video whacked me right in the nostalgia. I remember sitting in an internet cafe in a bookshop talking to 'friends' on chat sites or looking at sites that looked like this. And not just guestbook wars... newsletter list wars! Signed up folk to Andrew W K's and UK's gardener extraordinaire, and OAP fave, Alan Titchmarsh's fan email newletters to fill their inbox with annoyance... Ah, the good old days! Love your videos! Been using Linux for years but finally starting to embrace the terminal. Recently went back to rss with newsboat, reading new articles with lynx, and launching YT videos with mpv. I'm now considering getting a minimalist/low power server like a pi or resurrected old laptop so I can just ssh in from any device at home. Keep up the inspiring and fun content!

I've spent time on computers since 1978. I currently have a goodly number most of which I've built. I started out with Tandy, went to Commodore (includes Amiga) then wound up with these PC compatibles. I'm also a vintage radio collector (have shack, can't yack). All of my PC's are home-built. Yes, I use Mint Linux! I'm in if it has wires, knobs, switches and LIGHTS! Oh, I have grown-up children and grandkids.

Funny but not secure maybe I should add one to my own website but then with a more secure technology and system. Please check out my website which is hosted on a raspberry pi. http://minimos11.net/. Which is a mixture between 90 web and current web but mostly modern web but at least not a website made for a phone screen and the stretched to a computer screen. My name is Walter Hartwell White. I live at 308 Negra Arroyo Lane, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 87104. This is my confession. If you're watching this tape, I'm probably dead– murdered by my brother-in-law, Hank Schrader. Hank has been building a meth empire for over a year now, and using me as his chemist. Shortly after my 50th birthday, he asked that I use my chemistry knowledge to cook methamphetamine, which he would then sell using connections that he made through his career with the DEA. I was... astounded. I... I always thought Hank was a very moral man, and I was particularly vulnerable at the time – something he knew and took advantage of. I was reeling from a cancer diagnosis that was poised to bankrupt my family. Hank took me in on a ride-along and showed me just how much money even a small meth operation could make. And I was weak. I didn't want my family to go into financial ruin, so I agreed. Hank had a partner, a businessman named Gustavo Fring. Hank sold me into servitude to this man. And when I tried to quit, Fring threatened my family. I didn't know where to turn. Eventually, Hank and Fring had a falling-out. Things escalated. Fring was able to arrange – uh, I guess... I guess you call it a "hit" – on Hank, and failed, but Hank was seriously injured. And I wound up paying his medical bills, which amounted to a little over $177,000. Upon recovery, Hank was bent on revenge. Working with a man named Hector Salamanca, he plotted to kill Fring. The bomb that he used was built by me, and he gave me no option in it. I have often contemplated suicide, but I'm a coward. I wanted to go to the police, but I was frightened. Hank had risen to become the head of the Albuquerque DEA. To keep me in line, he took my children. For three months, he kept them. My wife had no idea of my criminal activities, and was horrified to learn what I had done. I was in hell. I hated myself for what I had brought upon my family. Recently, I tried once again to quit, and in response, he gave me this. [Walt points to the bruise on his face left by Hank in "Blood Money."] I can't take this anymore. I live in fear every day that Hank will kill me, or worse, hurt my family. All I could think to do was to make this video and hope that the world will finally see this man for what he really is.

I really wish I'd had friends like you (IRL or online) in the '90s. I would have gotten into so much trouble learning how to break (um, "harden") the internet within a cabal of fellow nerds. P.S. With all your Blizzard references--I just got OG StarCraft running on the Steam Deck, first through Bottles, then directly through Steam (even managed to bypass the battlenet launcher) and I am *shocked* not so much by how well the game runs (IIRC it ran fine with WINE ca 2010) but how well that game stands up to the test of time.

Great Video, Veronika. Thank you for the nostalgia. I used to have a personal webpage with a guestbook, hitcounter and a lot of GIFS back in the 90's. Like everybody else at this time, lol. Fun times and horrible times as well, as you constantly had to watch your online counter, since ISPs usually charged you per minute. And damn, one minute online was NOT cheap. Hi Veronica, thanks for the good memories of the good old days! I’m sat here reminiscing about installing my first 56k modem, LucasArts fan sites on free web hosts and learning HTML in Notepad. I’m a web developer now and even though we’ve never had it better in terms of technology I still miss those days when the web felt a bit smaller and more like an exclusives club for the people who’d taken the time to understand it. Hi Veronica, i like your videos (especially the Linux and retro internet-type content). I simply love looking at the 90s web, it seems so chill compared to nowadays, everything has a purpose, it's as light as ever and there's no tracking going on. One of my first Perl scripts was a guestbook back about '95 or so. Email forms, visitor counters, countdown clocks, etc - simple scripts for a simpler time. I like to think some of those scripts are still in use, somewhere.

Greetings from Ireland. YouTube subscriber & Mastodon follower here. If you can bottle your enthusiasm I'll buy it. Your cheerful resilience in the face of some of what comes your was is awesome. Note: Americans have devalued that word immensely. It doesn't mean nice, cool, great, hip, improved, new etc. I mean it in the proper sense. The country I grew up in was in some respects like yours now. It is utterly different now. Change happens. It's not so long since people threw the fears of their parents generation aside. It will happen in America and you'll live to see it. (I've lived there; been all over, 44 states). Your wife is gorgeous. And you're dazzlingly talented. PS I did a stint as a COBOL programmer in the 80s and endured the mockery then of office mates working in PL/1 which we also used (on the first VAX in the country). "Are you out of the working storage section yet?" etc. I took pride in writing properly structured (JSP style) readable code and did so whatever the language. I've never had to maintain any bad code, thankfully. My riposte to "horse and cart" ragging was "none of my code will ever be discarded because it's incomprehensible". I'd watch a video on COBOL if you made one.

I'm too young to remember ever writing in an online guestbook. But it seems like a really nice idea, when the internet was smaller and filled with more personal pages. I'm guessing the reason they don't exist anymore - outside of trends - is trust and moderation ? I wouldn't be super into the idea of trusting anyone write some stupid or offensive thing inside one of these - just thinking about possibly moderating it doesn't sound fun either. I'm happy I got to write in this, feels like participating in a part of history I would have missed otherwise. Thank you so much for the high quality content you offer online, you're amazing ! :-D
